Violence & Abuse Prevention

What is violence or abuse?

Domestic Violence

A pattern of abusive behavior that keeps one partner in a position of power over the other partner through the use of fear, intimidation, and control.

Physical Abuse

Grabbing, pinching, shoving, slapping, hitting, hair pulling, biting, etc.  Denying medical care or forcing alcohol and/or drug use.

Sexual Abuse

Coercing or attempting to coerce and sexual contact without consent, e.g. marital rape, forcing sex after the physical beating, attacks on sexual parts of the body, or treating another in a sexually demeaning manner.

Economic Abuse

When one intimate partner has control over the other partner’s access to economic resources, which diminishes the victim’s capacity to support themselves and forces them to depend on the perpetrator financially.

Emotional Abuse

Any kind of abuse which is emotional rather than physical in nature, e.g., constant criticism, belittling one’s abilities, name-calling, and/or damaging a partner’s relationship with the children.

Psychological Abuse

Psychological abuse involves a person’s attempts to frighten, control, or isolate you. It’s in the abuser’s words and actions, as well as their persistence in these behaviors.
